I Tried to Kill You 2014

13.5 x 9.5 in

Acrylic, pen, and mixed media on paper.

Born in Manuel, Cuba in 1973, Juan Lazaro Gutierrez Mamblas is a painter who focuses his vision on the bicycle. His abstract works with forms floating on a virtually monochrome ground are evocative of the 20th century inventions of Paul Klee. It is the intriguing puzzle of these forms that draw the viewer into the works where enigmas and paradoxes confound the senses. Lazaro deconstructs the universal bicycle into colorful parts that splash out onto the viewer. Imagination and creativity are given to explore the use of non-representational forms and elements. This artistic style allows for a wide range of interpretations and encourages viewers to engage with the artwork on a more personal and subjective level.

When asked about his art and what he is trying to express, he said that his work as the manifestation of unspoken things.

"I try to express my ideas and thoughts by giving them the exact date of the year in which I finish the canvas. The inner world and my experience of my life each day are reflected in my work, but in a non-figurative manner. The anger, regret and joy that I feel are expressed in my art."
